Hurricane Who: Inside the Hub

3 02 2009

“The Twenty-First Century is when Everything Changes…” – Captain Jack Harkness

Torchwood

It is a show that has captivated an audience and has become a worldwide phenomenon. On a Thursday night in February, we will be convening at the Cricketers Arms Pub in Orlando to take a closer look at this shadow organization. From its founding by Queen Victoria in Doctor Who, to its sweeping of the US on BBC America, we will examine this highly successful spinoff.

Of course, we will not be doing this alone.

Joining us that evening will be a very special guest. Someone who has been with Torchwood from the very beginning. From the evening in the rain when Gwen Cooper spied on figures from a roof, to a trip to CERN for a ghostly encounter with a particle accelerator. From a heart-breaking encounter with a Cyberwoman in the basement, to a frightening encounter with a Dalek in the Hub. Our Guest has seen it all.

It is with great joy we welcome to Florida…

Gareth joins us fresh from his appearance at Gallifrey One, and we are delighted that he is taking the time to visit our corner of the world. With door prizes, episode viewings, and a special meet and greet, this is an evening that promises to be fun for all.

Tickets are available at HurricaneWho.com and are going fast!!!

Hope to see you at the Pub!!

Capt. Mike Yates

As April approaches, we are pleased to announce a new guest for our April 12th Bon Voyage Party.

Richard Franklin, known to fans of the Classic Series as Capt. Mike Yates of UNIT, will be joining us for our night at Cricketers Arms.

As a Companion to the Third Doctor as played by Jon Pertwee, Franklin appeared alongside Elizabeth Sladen and Katy Manning for many adventures. Mike Yates returned to the screen for the anniversay stories The Five Doctors and Dimensions in Time.

April will see Franklin returning to the role yet again, with the release of The Magicians Oath, an original audio story released by Big Finish Productions.

Richard is joining previously announced Guest Frazer Hines, Jamie McCrimmon, who appeared alongside Patrick Troughton throughout his tenure as The Doctor.

We look forward to welcoming both of these gentlemen to Florida, for an insightful evening into the history of our favorite program.

Matt Smith is the Doctor!!

Matt Smith, The Eleventh Doctor

Matt Smith, The Eleventh Doctor

The BBC has announced the actor who will be playing the role of the Doctor once David Tennant leaves at the end of 2009. 26-year-old Matt Smith will be the youngest actor to have played the role in the history of the show.

Chief Writer Steven Moffat, who was one of those behind Smith’s casting, had the following to say about the actor: ”The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man.”

Executive producer Piers Wenger stated that: “It was abundantly clear that he had that ‘Doctor-ness’ about him. You are either the Doctor or you are not.”

When asked about bringing the character of The Doctor to life, Smith replied: “I’ve got this wonderful journey in front of me where I’ve got this six months to build this Time Lord – and that’s such an exciting prospect.”

Hurricane Who will be spending an evening in late February looking at the work of Smith, in preparation of his taking on the role of the Doctor. Keep checking back on the site, as there will be an announcement made for this forthcoming event soon.
