Matt Smith is the Doctor!!

Matt Smith, The Eleventh Doctor

Matt Smith, The Eleventh Doctor

The BBC has announced the actor who will be playing the role of the Doctor once David Tennant leaves at the end of 2009. 26-year-old Matt Smith will be the youngest actor to have played the role in the history of the show.

Chief Writer Steven Moffat, who was one of those behind Smith’s casting, had the following to say about the actor: “The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man.”

Executive producer Piers Wenger stated that: “It was abundantly clear that he had that ‘Doctor-ness’ about him. You are either the Doctor or you are not.”

When asked about bringing the character of The Doctor to life, Smith replied: “I’ve got this wonderful journey in front of me where I’ve got this six months to build this Time Lord – and that’s such an exciting prospect.”

Hurricane Who will be spending an evening in late February looking at the work of Smith, in preparation of his taking on the role of the Doctor. Keep checking back on the site, as there will be an announcement made for this forthcoming event soon.

New Guest Announcement

3 01 2009

As we sit less than a week into 2009, I would like to announce another Guest to our lineup for the Convention this October.

Rob Shearman

Rob Shearman

Rob Shearman is no stranger to the World of Doctor Who. He has written audio dramas for BBV and Big Finish Productions. These dramas include The Holy Terror, Jubilee, and The Chimes of Midnight. All three of these stories won Best Audio Drama in Doctor Who Magazine in the year they were released.

In 2007, Shearman published his first book. Tiny Deaths is a collection of short stories which was awarded the World Fantasy Award for Best Collection.

Shearman continues to contribute to the world of Doctor Who. His most recent contribution was to The Story of Martha , released in December 2008.
Rob has been a friend of Hurricane Who for many years, even appearing on Tuddle Talk during its first night. That appearance can be downloaded via the PodCast section of this site. We are delighted to welcome him to Florida for the first of what we hope will be many visits.

Big Finish comes to Hurricane Who

1 01 2009

With the New Year upon us, we are just 10 short months away from Hurricane Who.  To start the year off right, I would like to announce some new guests for Hurricane Who.

Big Finish Productions has been involved in making new Doctor Who stories for audio for more than 10 years, so we are delighted to be welcoming them to Florida for our first Convention. Writer Simon Guerrier is already scheduled to attend, and we are delighted to have the following individuals joining him.

jason2Jason Haigh-Ellery began Big Finish in 1996. With his co-producers, he has since produced and/or directed over 160 plays, including Big Finish’s Doctor Who range. Starring original cast members from the Classic Series reprising their roles, the dramas have also featured actors from the New Series including David Tennant, Noel Clarke, Sir Derek Jacobi, Mark Gatiss and Nicholas Briggs.  Other series include Stargate, Sapphire and Steel, The Tomorrow People, Professor Bernice Summerfield, Dalek Empire, and Judge Dredd.

Big Finish will be represented in our Dealers Room by Alien Entertainment. Alien Entertainment also hosts the annual Chicago TARDIS in Illinois every Thanksgiving.

More Guest Information is forthcoming.
